The fabric is from Mayan Hands, a company that sources handmade woven fabrics from Guatemala. The weavers are able to design patterns that blend modern and traditional styles, as well as set pricing for very high-quality products. The women who hand weave the fabric also are able to learn about international markets, as well as stimulate women’s contributions to the economy. What a great company! We are so thrilled to work with them.

Love, luck, and good karma,
Frieda & Nellie
Last week we had the unique opportunity to speak to the 92nd Street Y’s Passport NYC Fashion students about sustainability. Sitting amongst panelists (featured below) Carolina and Melissa Cantor of Shop Ethica (http://www.shopethica.com/), Melissa Joy Manning (http://www.melissajoymanning.com) and Jessica Kane from The Huffington Post, we really got to thinking about what sustainability means to the Frieda and Nellie culture. Rachel Schwartzmann of The Styleline (http://thestyleline.com/) led the panel by asking us a series of poignant questions pertaining to our environmental, social and personal sustainability.
We thought we’d report a few takeaways from our panel experience and inform our followers about how sustainability is truly at the core of the Frieda and Nellie brand.
Environmental: “Reuse, Repurpose and Reinvent” is our mantra! We love giving new life to vintage jewelry by weaving through some fresh friendship bracelet detailing or some shiny Swarovski crystals. We like to think of this process as glamorous recycling, reviving a piece of well-used jewelry and allowing it to be loved and worn once again with a modern twist.
Frieda and Nellie sustainability tip: use scraps of old ribbon as confetti for a fun photo shoot or birthday surprise
Social: Here at Frieda and Nellie, we’re all about good karma. The majority of our supplies are produced right here in New York City. This way we’re supporting local vendors and giving back to the community that has nurtured our brand since day one, regardless of how rough and tumble this city is. We also buy a lot of our friendship bracelets from some lovely ladies down in Guatemala, lending our support to creative, working women worldwide!
Personal: Nurturing yourself is a vital part of sustaining a healthy, happy lifestyle. Getting outside and breathing some fresh air not only gives you more energy and sharpens your mind, it gets your creative juices flowing. Taking our pups out for a mid-day walk keeps us focused and having some tail-wagging around the office keeps us smiling. Surrounding ourselves with productive, light-hearted and trustworthy individuals relieves tension and allows us to create and design in a healthy, stress-free environment.
Wouldn’t these faces make you smile?

Saturday night is not only the best six hours of the week, Saturday night is a state of mind. When we’re feeling like a Saturday night we’re adventurous, we’re wild and crazy and carefree. We dance to great music or to no music at all. We don’t care about calories or blistered feet or wearing too much makeup. This attitude is the driving force behind our Saturday Soirée Tassel Earrings. Glitz and glamour shouldn’t be exclusively reserved for a splurge-worthy dinner in Meatpacking or sitting center stage at a Broadway Show. Frieda and Nellie girls are fabulous in broad-daylight, accessorized to a T, T for tassels that is. Our Saturday Soirée Earrings start with a French wire hook closure attached to a stunning twin Swarovski crystal drop base available in Black and Silver, Rose & Lavender or Gold & Silver. Finished with a metallic tassel, these show stoppers will take you from an impromptu visit to the MoMA to a Cabaret Show in the East Village. For under $100, these tasseled gems are made for the sophisticated, easygoing, New York City girl who covets the attitude of a Saturday night.

The union of two exceptional entities is an amazing thing. Extra virgin olive oil and balsmic vinegar from Tuscany, Will and Kate under the pews of Westminster Abbey and Chanel espadrilles with some great J-brand skinnies… There is no doubt that the best things in life come in pairs. So naturally, when Calypso approached Frieda and Nellie to collaborate on an exclusive necklace, we were beyond thrilled. We admit, keeping this collaboration a secret hasn’t been an easy feat. But finally, on this beautiful 82-degree, sunshiny day we can show the world the fruits of our labour: The Queen of the Night.
We haven’t been this excited about a major announcement since Marc Jacobs started designing for Louis Vuitton or the new season of Orange is the New Black aired on Netflix. With that being said, this news blows PVC totes and made for binge-watching TV dramas out of the water. Like us, we’re sure you want to know everything there is to know about this killer collab. Frieda and Nellie’s social media team had a unique opportunity to sit down with Stacy and Sarah to learn a little more about the ‘QOTN,’ here’s what they had to say:
Q: When and how did you decide to collaborate with Calypso?
A: We always loved the beachy, upscale vibe of Calypso St. Barth and knew we wanted to work with them from the get-go of Frieda and Nellie. We were doing a trunk show at Henri Bendel in the early Spring and the jewelry buyers from Calypso stopped by and suggested we collaborate on an exclusive project. We were all like YESS OF COURSE! We put together a few samples and worked with their team back and forth to create the most unique, special, groovy necklace and eventually finalized the design for the Queen of the Night! Both teams had the goal of creating a statement piece that was both memorable and practical, we hope our shared customers are as excited as we are about final product!
Q: What elements do Calypso and Frieda and Nellie share?
A: The Calypso woman is pretty similar to the Frieda and Nellie woman, she is a smart, inspired, bohemian, boho chic, adventurous, art and travel loving individual who loves to push the boundaries of her style. She also appreciates quality, the small things in life and always makes a statement. Working with the Calypso team has been wonderful in that we were able create a unique piece that truly showcases the lifestyle of both brands, and that of our customers.
Q: How did you decide on the name “Queen of the Night” for your new statement necklace?
A: We knew we wanted the necklace to be strong and powerful (even though it is super lightweight) and used Cleopatra as our inspiration. It actually has a bit of an Egyptian flair. On that note, the Queen of the Night seemed perfect to convey it’s bold, regal qualities.
Q: What are your favourite characteristics of the QOTN necklace?
A: We love the eye-catching silvers of the paddles but also really love the greys and rare vintage Swarovski milk glass, aurora borealis and jet black colored crystals above. These elements fuse modernity with vintage charm. We can’t forget the silk-ribbon ties with tassels at the end that make it versatile and adjustable. The F&N girl can wear her necklace at any length depending on her mood or outfit, pretty groovy.
Q: Speaking of which, if you were to wear it with one outfit, what would it be?
A: Definitely with a Calypso lace tank, J-Brand boyfriend jeans and Chanel ballet flats during the day with a ton of stackable friendship bracelets. But at night we’d wear it long long with a signature Calypso wrap dress in fuchsia or ecru with espadrille wedges (maybe throw on some Frieda and Nellie tassel earrings and an Edie Parker clutch for good measure). Very New York.
Q: So cool that you guys are collaborating with a major retailer like Calypso, do you have any other major collabs coming down the pipeline?
We’re so so excited to announce our first collaboration with Calypso and look forward to many more exciting projects together in the future, so keep checking our Insta and Facebook for more announcements ;)

It’s summer and we’ve been growing out our hair all year for this weather. The breeze may cause a few strands to get caught on our glossed lips but we don’t care, nothing can get us down under the balmy 80-degree sunshine. Here at Frieda and Nellie we’re firm believers that nothing matches sun-kissed skin and wind-blown beach waves quite like some killer jewels. Our recipe for doing things right is simple: go big, and go bright. A wrist that sports stacks of vivid color mixed with a bit of bling is a reminder of what summer is all about - letting loose and having fun with your friends, and your style. To create: Use scissors to cut a piece of paracord to the approximate size of your wrist and seal the cord by burning the tips. Squeeze a small dab of glue onto one end of the paracord and place the cord coil cap over. Repeat on the other end. Use pliers to attach a jump ring to one end and a lobster clasp to the other. Knot a piece of embroidery thread at the end of the cap and wrap the thread around the paracord until approx. 1” is covered. Intertwine a piece of colored Swarovski cup chain (1” smaller than your wrist length) and wrap the embroidery thread twice between each rhinestone link. Double knot the thread once you’ve finished wrapping the entire bracelet.
❤️ glad to have inspired a fun project 🙌🙌🙌
